Liquid calories: the quietest reason people stall

Last updated August 2026

You can be careful with food all day and still eat 900 uncounted calories. Drinks bypass the fullness signals that solid food triggers, so the body simply adds them on top.

A normal day, counted

  • Kopi susu, morning

    150–190 kcal

  • Teh tarik with lunch

    180–220 kcal

  • Bubble tea, afternoon

    300–500 kcal

  • Soft drink with dinner

    140–210 kcal

  • Total

770–1,120 kcal — an entire extra meal, invisible.

Why liquids do not fill you

Solid food stretches the stomach and slows gastric emptying, which triggers satiety hormones. Liquid passes through quickly and produces a much weaker signal, so a 400 kcal drink does not reduce how much you eat afterwards — it simply adds 400 kcal.

Juice behaves the same way. Blending or juicing removes the fibre matrix that made the fruit filling in the first place.

Better orders that still taste like something

  • Kurang manis or kosong

Cuts 60–120 kcal per glass instantly, and your palate adapts within two weeks.

  • Kopi o kosong / teh o ais limau

Near zero calories, still a proper drink.

  • Sparkling water with lime

Handles the craving for something fizzy and cold.

  • Milk instead of a sweet latte

Protein and calcium rather than syrup.

  • Coconut water, sometimes

45 kcal per 100 ml — hydrating, but not free.

The two-week test

Log every drink for fourteen days and change nothing else. Most people find drinks are 15–25% of their intake. Halving that one number is usually a bigger deficit than any food change they were willing to make.
